Open ACTA Mexico, a group that wants to put a stop to the controversial ACTA treaty, recently had a meeting with the Mexican Ministry of the Economy in relation to the treaty negotiations, and some interesting notes have come out of the meeting, which was also attended by a rep from the MPAA.
Apparently, the MPAA rep asked whether it would be possible to use the ACTA to close down "damaging" websites, pointing to Wikileaks as an example. Wikileaks has been involved leaking sensitive information regarding the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, so it was rather strange that the MPAA would be enquiring about this website. The Open ACTA Mexico member attending the meeting even asked what this had to do with movies.
The obvious answer is that the MPAA wants to use the ACTA as a means to force government to close down websites that they feel is a threat, much like how some governments would consider Wikileaks a threat. On top of the list of "enemy" websites would include The Pirate Bay.
By using the ACTA, the MPAA is providing more evidence of its strategy of shifting responsibility of copyright protection, the protection of its business model, onto governments.
