German Music Authority Warning Kindergartens To Observe Copyright Law

Germany's music licensing agency, GEMA, has sent letter to kindergarten, reminding them the need to pay up for making copies of songs for children to sing.

Kindergartens that make copies of the actual song, or copies of lyrics, must pay GEMA a small fee, generally 56 Euros for 500 copies of a song, or could face possible action, including legal action.

The rule is for modern songs, with traditional songs being exempt.

"If a school does not make any copies of music, then of course they don't need to pay anything, " explained GEMA spokesperson Peter Hempel.

    Not yet anyway.

Preschools have been sent a reminder that they need to pay for a license if they want to copy sheet music for the children to sing certain songs. This has triggered a copyright discussion in Germany.
