Default Need advice setting up a standalone player

I'm building a "standalone" player. well ok its just a pc, but all i'm doing with it is using it as a divx player in my living room.

The problem is, I got it working but its too slow!
Unless I set the post processing to 0, I get audio sync problems....at post processing of 1, i get around 400ms sync offsets....sometimes 900ms which is almost a second! its annoying!

This PC, has a PIII 733 mhz, 64 megs ram, new fresh install win98, via chipset, ATI rage pro tv/out card. the ATI card sucks, i agree...so i'm wondering if maybe a faster card would let me play back divx movies at a higher post processing level with lower cpu usage?

"64 megs ram"

Sounds too low for handling full length videos properly.
