EA has had to issue an official apology over 'unacceptable' Wii U jokes posted to the Twitter account owned by its 'Frostbite' game engine.
As part of an April Fools day prank, the Frostbite Twitter account posted somewhat mean spirited tweets poking fun at the perceived lack of power of Nintendo's flagship console.
EA's support for the Wii U has been questioned recently, most notably due to the lack of Frostbite 3 support on the Wii U. The engine is at the core of several of EA's major IPs, including the Battlefield and Need For Speed series.
These latest tweets would not have helped the cause.
One tweet sarcastically labels the Wii U as the most powerful next-gen console.
"Frostbite now runs on the #WiiU since it is the most powerful Gen4 platform, our renderer is now optomized for Mario and Zelda," the now deleted tweet read.
Another tweet also mocks the perceived notion that the Wii U is underpowered.
"Good news, we have finally fixed and optimized our 'netcode'. Uses quantum entanglement for Zero Latency connections. Exclusively on #WiiU."
Nintendo and their fans were not impressed. Neither was EA's Chief Operating Officer Peter Moore, who took to Twitter to issue an apology.
"Our apologies to partners @NintendoAmerica & fan @FrostbiteEngine's poor attempt at April Fools not condoned by EA : unacceptable/ stupid," Moore's apology read.
EA revealed last year that no games were in development for the Wii U, and then quickly reversed the statement that games were still being developed.
