    New Anti-Piracy Method: Finger Amputations

A popular Nigerian singer has suggested a new form of punishment for music pirates that may be the most potent yet, although one that some may find a tad harsh.

Advocating a different form of graduated response, Nigerian singer Stella Monye says that the best way to stop music pirates is by chopping off their fingers every time they are caught pirating.

This three-strikes alternative, technically a 10-strike regime, would not only serve as a deterrent to future attempts at piracy, as Monye points out, it also has the added effect of making piracy, or any finger based activities, harder for these alleged pirates.

"Cutting their fingers off will stop them, by the time you cut off two people’s fingers others will stop," singer Stella Monye is reported to have said.

"If their fingers are cut, they won't [be able to use the hands] in pirating the works," continues Monye. "They will learn and it will be faster in stopping them; without a drastic measure they won't stop."

While this "drastic measure" may be effective in stopping the digital version of "five-finger discounts", the controversial plan may is unlikely to make the cut with right holders keen to not appear as the bad guy in the piracy debate.

And even if rights holders decide to take Monye's advice, consumer rights groups, and very likely even human rights groups, will most likely oppose such a plan.
