On the changes page they say the 'Quarter Pixel' encoding is improved.
But by default it's disabled by the profiles

Divx 5.03 seems to be a major upgrade. Especially interesting, is the feature that allows you to do "nth" passes! Wondering how a 5-pass divx 5.03 movie will look Plus, I've heard some users talk about a "speed gain" by using this codec.

Darn. And here I am still playingaround with XviD. Yet another codec to test out.

so far i've done only little testing but the results of 4,6 and 8 passes didnt look noticibly better than 2 passes (using a bitrate of 888 and 777 in another testrun)

seems like the effect will rather be reaching a desired final output size will be more acurate.

speed is something i cant judge yet since i used a small dolby digital vob trailer for my tests.
i'm running a 4 pass test right now which i had done with 502 before.

Alright, I'm stumped. Has DXN decided to offer only the basic and paid-pro version? I can't find any GAIN-bundled installation file of the codec anywhere on the site.

This makes a lot of sense, there is nothing in multi-pass encoding that will improve the basic compression of individual frames. Multipass encoding only improves the bitrate distribution, which has been know to be less than optimal with 2-pass encoding in divx5.02.

there is an adware version in the download section

I must be blind or something, but I really can't find any link to that on this page. Could you give me a direct link to the appropriate page, Uncas?

on that very page you link, take a look at the top, you should see DOWNLOADS

go there and you should see the three different downloads:

                          That's weird . . .

I only have two choices to select from, and those are the Free and the Paid version. The Ad-ware version is not there! I'll have to try downloading from elsewhere. Thanks anyway, Uncas.

did you check the very url that you can see in my screenshot?

because yours is a little different from where i went.

going to your url i had to click DOWNLOADS once more.

I have clicked here and there, back and forth, and it is the same page that I keep encountering. I'll just get the codec from another system tomorrow.
