which video format is superior AVI or MPEG?

which video format is superior. AVI or MPEG. when I watch them, the both look the same. I have some AVI & MPEG of the "SAME" movie file but I notice the mpeg version is much much smaller than the avi version.

    thnx.

It depends very much on how you want the files used.

The avi format uses different types of codecs. When the DivX codec made its debut, the avi format henceforth was able to attain a much higher compression rate than MPEG and yet still attain comparable quality. This makes it suitable for space-constrained video buff. (Read: DVD rippers)

However, the MPEG format is more widely accepted worldwide. Any .mpg file will most likely be played without a problem on any given computer and generally, there is no codec that needs to be installed. Hence, this format is very suitable for mass distribution, say from a website or on CDs.

how do you make a mpg file in a Premiere? Which settings do you use?
Is the mpg video file bigger the avi file compressed to divx?

Generally yes, though it's still possible that excess bitrate is specified for the avi encoding and the final result, hence, becomes oversized.
