Having trouble getting Subtitler 2.0.5 to open a .sub file.

    Hello All,
I am having trouble getting Subtitler 2.0.5 to open a .sub file.

    My method:

    Got to "File"
    "Open text or subtitle"
I then try to select "VTS_01_0.sub"
And the error I get is "Failed to determine subtitle format Selected file format might not be supported yet."

The subtitles were extracted from ripped DVD files residing on my hard drive using VobSub that came with GKnot.

I have searched but couldn't find any updates for the software or anyone else reporting this problem and couldn't find this problem mentioned in the help file.

I am running Windows XP, SP 1
    Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66
    2 GB RAM
And I have Windows Media Player 9 installed.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or ideas.

Just curious ... can you upgrade to XP, SP2 ...

Not sure that is your problem ...

      Thank you for your reply.

      Unfortunately, no.
I've tried that in the past but my computer went through endless rebooting loops.

No other thoughts on the matter?
It's not much good to me if it can't open .sub files.

          Hi Sombodee,

I am surprised some of the regulars have not jumped in and help out ... may be they are like me ... I persoanlly have not used this program.

But, you might want to take a look at "Subtitle Workshop" program ... also a freeware.

          G!

I tried your suggestion about Subtitle Workshop -
something odd is going on here.
It can't open the .sub file either!

            It says:

"Bad subtitle or an unsupported format".

Well I have absolutely no idea what's wrong with my system (or maybe it's the nut at the keyboard haha) that these programs can't open the .sub files but I did manage to figure out a work-around that gives me the end results I want.

I used SubRip 150b4 to find the subtitles in the vobs, created a srt file (for whatever reason, my stand alone DivX players can't play the srt files this program creates) and then I open the AVI and srt files in Media Subtitler.

From there I spell check (I love this feature in Media Subtitler!), preview and make any changes (this program sure makes it easy!) and save.
My players (Philips 642 and Pioneer DV 400) are able to play the srts from Media Subtitler

Nice to hear you found the program useful, because it's the result of many months of hard work... for some reason now I'm having problemas with the Spell Check feature, but it's probably related to an incompatibility wiith Office XP. I assume you are using Office 2003.

                Regards,
                Andres

                  Thank you for your response
I surely do appreciate the work that went into creating this program! Plus being free - you can't beat that

I'm using Office XP as well. Every once in a while spell check will hang and I have to close the program and restart it but thankfully, it's not often.
