well has anyone given these 2 a try and how did it come out, clean as a whiistle?

I'll give SuperAntiSpyware a try but I'm curious about something. You mentioned that a good video processing machine never sees the internet. If it's not giving secrets away how do you put stuff on this machine? Do you have a gateway that's multi-homed to firewall it or what? Don't tell me you burn data DVDs to copy, then process and burn!!

here's my older computer before I do a video conversion, it's running about as lean and mean as I can make it, it needs all the help it can get, my athlon64 single core is a little more able to stand the workload

I was browsing without a condom for a long time because real-time protection schemes bogged the machine down. I got nailed through IE BHO a while back so now I've been checking out backup and protection schemes. The Avast doesn't seem too bad because you can enable only http filtering. I just installed No Script too. Short of uninstalling IE(which I guess they made just about impossible in Vista) I've set everything I can to deny access to it and removed any BHOs or download managers for it.

Making backups of the OS and installed software it's become obvious how much leaner XP is than Vista!! But wutcha' gonna' do?

My Vista machine has 2 GB. About the only thing that sometimes feels sluggish is when you move a file on the same drive it pops up a dialog as if you were copying. Sometimes that sits there for a few seconds. That and slow shutdown. What I was referring to is the bulk of the OS on disk. I can store a compressed snapshop of my XP OS and applications on a single DVD(don't have any compilers or big apps installed yet but even so.) The Vista machine doesn't have that many apps either but a similar snapshot is 38 GB!!! Needless to say I didn't burn DVDs. I bought a USB drive for the backups.

It does have its good points though. When I get the occasional explorer shell crash it usually offers to restart explorer without even logging off.

It seems pretty stable.

Wow, that's amazing how you can get those processes/threads that low. I take it that you don't really have any software installed other than the bare minimum? Do you also dump unnecessary windows components, such as paint, calculator, character map, etc, or don't those play into the lean & mean factor? I followed your power user setup thread for my xp pc, dumped a lot of junk from the add/remove, but was never able to get that clean...

My linux pc has 30 processes running right now, I know I could shave about 5 -7 of those off right away if I wasn't running some "candy" programs.

there are several services you can turn off with a small savings of resources

my power user thread was just about significant savings, main thing is I don't have anything loading at bootup but windows

every program gets a custom/advanced install or setup

Chewy, I did run and try the Super Anti SPY Ware. I did a complete scan and it did take out quite a few problems. I then did a complete scan using Adaware SE and it still indicated two more incidents. I ran both another time each to make sure every thing was clean. I am going to try in another week or so and reverse the order. Use Adaware SE first and then scan using Super Anti spy ware and see if it picks up things that Adaware SE didn't.

My scheme has been to set both Firefox and Opera to delete cache and cookies on closing. Seems easier than chasing down tracking cookies using patterns and all that. While the browser is up it accepts the cookie so stuff works. If I close and later go back to a site I just use the password tool to log in again. I used to waste a lot of time with WinPatrol entering in patterns to block tracking cookies and they just kept changing the names of the cookies to elude the pattern.

imgburn is also free for the burning

both are worthy programs for donations tho

It's not often that I am impressed with a relatively new program in this field, but I tried one out today and it's got spybot and adaware beat by a country mile.

In my opinion it's probably worth paying for the upgrade to PRO and dumping some other real time protection, but since I don't use any(live dangerously/lean and mean and all that)?

Took this one for a spin last night and it found two trojan.netdotcom items that, upon google search, came up as a medium threat. I removed them anyway and all seems well. This does look like a good program chewy, thanks. Should I not continue periodic scans with spybot S&D and Adaware anymore?
