i think the fastest processor on earth is athlon x2 4800+. (and i dont think intel dual cores r cost effective). anyway does 64bit matters if somebody has less than 4GB ram?

64bit won't matter at all if your pc doesn't have hardware with 64bit drivers, 64bit OS and then 64bit application.

if even ONE of those 3 things aren't present, there will be no benefits, aside from the fact that athlon64's (and X2's) are currently the best consumer CPU's available today

not true. i think HP and samsung and NASA have the fastest (custom) pc's in the world . but aside from them, even amd opterons are faster

I looked up the specs on the opteron x2 4800, except for being multiplier
            unlocked and 500$ more, I couldn't find a difference,

sorry should say : better overclockers (rather made for overclocking )

so if you're not into OC'ing, they are indeed exactly the same. i'd gladly trade mine in for an opteron

Nah! you would be even more afraid to blow $1300US in the hot aussie
summer, but if you relocated to southern Tazmania and opened the windows.

lol if i had an opteron i would most definitely OC it, regardless of these horrible hot & sticky weather conditions! the high price is for its amazing stability. i said "trade in", not pay the difference!

Well the multiplier settings would be so much easier than ramping the fsb and
finding a sweet spot for the memory with a divider.
                    Pure geek heaven.
