    Fan runs all the time

I have an older gateway computer, the fan never shuts off, is there a setting to change this? Any help well appreciated. Smitty

A noisy fan can be a sign of dying one, clean and if it doesn't quiet down,
      replace.

Check the BIOS, sometimes there is an option for keeping the fan "always on", which might be turned on.

          Hi
Check the settings in windows power management.
START>CONTROL PANEL>POWER CONTROLS>ADVANCE - for Win ME but this should be close for other version too.

Have you looked at the fan?

no, I have'nt, somebody told me the fan might have a switch for power save or something on it, but I will have to take cover off to get to it. Does that sound like an option? Smitty

is the problem that its unusually loud (or malfunctioning), or that you just want to lower the power consumption?

                  did you try speedfan?

                    I meant the BIOS,

You can go into the BIOS by pressing a special key(you will be shown) when your PC boots up. for eg Just when the PC starts, watch the screen something like "Press F10(key) to enter BIOS" will be shown.

The control panel etc of windows wont help much here.
