Fried RJ-45 Lan Ports but, Wireless still works

Last night we had a tornado and severe thunderstorm. Well the lightning got my router (part of it) and my on board LAN port on my motherboard. The router still works for wireless devices though. Just the 4 ports don't work anymore.

I bought a new wired/wireless router, problem fixed!

Now to my question, can I use my old (fried) router as a "access point" for my wireless devices since wireless still works on it?

do you intend to use the old router WITHOUT cable/wireless as a repeater?

if so, that would only work with identical models iirc

Yes, I would want it to act like a repeater to regenerate the wireless signal. I have my mother who lives about 300 ft behind me. She gets 1 bar as of right now. My brother lives about 200 feet to the left of me. He doesn't get any bars but, it detects the wireless connection, it just won't connect to it cause the signal isn't strong enough.

Is there a way my old router can send the signal wireless to my new router or does it need to be hard wired (RJ-45) as well?

i suggest you check your routers manual for something on "repeater" and give it a try

            ++++++++

it should look like this (correct me if i'm wrong anybody):

-the repeater will have to be set to a "root-ap"
            - lan mac address and ssid of the ap or router will have to be set, which you want to repeat later on
            - the repeater should now only see the ap and the clientsignals
            - signals from ap and client will be forwarded (this will reduce the bandwidth to half of the max)

At the moment, I cannot find the manual.

I can get to the config/setup page by connection to the router with my 2nd PC. I am not sure which settings to change though.

What about hooking the 2nd router up to my 2nd PC and for the "Internet" port on the router, just use a patch cable to come out of a Ethernet card. (So the router would think my 2nd PC is the DSL modem)?

                Would that work?

Is that dangerous? Cause thats how I have it hooked up now. I just don't have a 3rd PC with a wireless PCI card to test it.

No, I doubt you will crash the internet, but if you get it to work, then
don't answer the door to any men in white coats carrying funny looking jackets with long sleeves and lots of buckles and straps, but if they do,
                      have Amber take a picture!
