Is this drive done for?

Hello, I was wondering if you guys could help me out on something. I have a Toshiba laptop of a friend's who the the DVD/CDRW drive has I think bit the dust. It will play and read dvd discs however will not play/read/burn cd's. I've tried updating the firmware to no avail. I uninstalled in windows and reinstalled with no luck. It's a HL-DT-ST RW/DVD Gcc4243n. I'll have the drive for a little longer today before it heads back across country. Thanks for any help and suggestions are greatly appricaited.

if it won't read a factory cd disk like an installer or program cd I think it's toast, usually the other way around as dvd's are harder and more finicky
