I installed XP for a friend over 3 years ago on their rather old PIII 500 mhz, 256 RAM with integrated video and it has been quite stable for internet and small programs.

You can get a decent computer so cheap now, I would think about an upgrade if it's in your budget.

I had my daughters amd K6-III 450 maxed out with win 98, she was ripping
mp3's at 25x with musicmatch and a good cd burner, when we upgraded her to Win xp and I did a partial power user setup, her rip speed dropped to
8x-10x, I took quite a while to troubleshoot, XP takes at least 300Mghz
just to run(footprint) leaving little for other programs. 98's footprint is probably 100Mghz with poweruser setup.

My old PIII 733 runs well with W2K Pro. Better than the 98 runs on the other side of it.

I like W2k in that 500-1000Mghz range, with at least 256 megs of ram,
but you'd better update it behind a good nat router before putting it on
the internet. W2k runs decent with 8megs of video, Wxp doesn't.

I'm behind 2 routers and a software firewall.

                        Thanks for the replies everybody!

I'd pull the video card and put it in something faster
Why does XP require a faster video card? Is that ugly Luna (or whatever its called) visual style so slow that it needs a fancy schmancy video card? I'd be running with the Classic style enabled.

I used to have my old PIII 500 running Win XP. It also only has 256MB RAM and onboard graphics.
