My experience or knowledge, most surge protectors are junk, their insurance a joke. A quality UPS is usually equipted with a fast blow fuse inside that is
very effective in a lightning strike(a friend/ma EE), my local telco engineers
just laughed at me about surge protection.
A client/friend whom I consider one of the smartest men I have ever met(book wise
plus common sense), germany flew him over 3 times to tell them how to clean up the old russian uranium mines in e germany, has lightning rods at his lake house, but every electronic device is plugged into a power strip which is turned off when he leaves or electrical storms approach, his house sits on a
knoll of ground next to a mile of open water. Fortunately for me he's not good with PCs, we trade advise.

bottom line: a physical switch is far superior to any surge protector or fuse

      Whats a quality UPS ?

I dont think I agree with your friend I have seen what happens first hand when lightning strikes.

In a wild storm there is no time to flip a switch, what if your not home, what if you get a lot of storms?

UninteruptablePowerSupply or something to that effect.

and all this is why I turn off my PC when not in use and avoid any overnight operations

        fast and furious = SAFE

For under $10 you can convert a regular power strip to a surge protecter/suppresser. Ya need 3 MOV's (metal oxide varistors) and need to solder in 6 places.

            Here's one site with instructions

                Carla,
this guy is in his 70's, he's been consulting for decades, altho his phd is in chem eng, he knows more about branching theory than most electrical engineers, if he's not home, he flips the switch to off position. I have seen my share of direct strikes, after a couple of decades in the home service industry.

I am understanding you hun but when I look that up I find what we call hear surge protectors mine have powere stritches too that will auto flip off when a surge hits we are talking about the same thing we are just calling it 2 different names.

Google surge protector and then google UninteruptablePowerSupply you will find the same things made by different companies.

So know that I know what UninteruptablePowerSupply (UPS) is I take back what I said about not trusting that over a surge protecor we are actually talking about the same things. I am with ya !

Then what came up on newegg for surge protector I just never called it that and never herd anyone say that before.

I should go back there and look at the name and model number of the one in my living room and google that.

An UPS usually has superior surge protection built into it,
after all they are fairly expensive and need protection themselves.

bottom line tho is the on/off switch is even better

my friend has his power strip/surge protectors positioned where it's convenient to trip the switch on and off as needed. He has expensive tastes in electronic equiptment. Mithsubishi, Bose, Marantz etc
however I like the johnny walker blu myself.

                          @Chewy,
Now you got me wondering what the heck it is that I have is it a surge protector or is it a UninteruptablePowerSupply?

I am going to see if I can get someone over here to pull out the TV to see what it really is I never knew there was 2 things.

What ever it is in my living room was over $400.00 it wasnt cheap.

What my computer is pluged into is definalty a surge protecor and I may be buying something new on new egg now.

I just use a standard 6 in 1 extension lead. Each socket has a switch so I can switch everything off at night if I want. I currently have box, monitor, router, usb hub, Hi- Fi and beer fridge running of it.

I did look for a surge protected extension but they don't come with inidvidual socket switches.
