Thanks JMET & Chewy for replying.
@JMET, the monitor did not come with any software.I have just formatted my PC and installed WinXP.I was using win2k previously and did not see this problem there.
@ Chewy, I do not have an AGP card installed .So there is no option of video out for me.
Just now I noticed that Device Manager is now showing the monitors as Default Monitors instead of Plug and Play Monitors.
BTW, I am not facing any problem with display .Just am curious to know the reasons.sigpic

Well, I was not entirely correct to say that I do not have any problems wth display.Actually I have, but this problem started much earlier than this dual monitor thing .So the two are probably unrelated. In SAFE MODE, I can't get to set my display to anything more than 800x600.This also happens at start up until the LOG ON TO WINDOWS window appears. From then on the display is ok(1024x768).
Any input on these inconsistent behaviours?sigpic

Ok.Tried as advised by Chewy. In SAFE MODE there is no monitor listed in DEVICE MANAGER.So, I uninstalled both the monitors from NORMAL mode and restarted.Same old story. Two DEFAULT MONITORS listed in DEVICE MANAGER.Below u can see the DEVICE MANAGER in SAFE MODE with monitor installed but not showing.

Back with windows 98 we had problems with ghost devices where the duplicates in device manager only showed in safe mode, they were a nuisance
but added to problems from excess registry calls. Xp handles it much better,
my suggestion was just a stab in the dark.
what is you monitor exactly?
what's the date on the driver for the vid adapter(on board)
did you have another graphics card in the computer at one time?

OK .I finally got it right. And ,as usual,Chewy was right on spot.I downloaded the latest driver for the display adapter from Intel site.Updating the driver resulted in one Default monitor in Device Manager.Thank u ALL for your valuable insight into the problem.LOL.sigpic
