    Win 95 Help

I have an NEC Pentium 90 with 1GB HD. It came with a win 95 operating system. I need this computer for certain programs and games that will only run on this older computer. On new computers with win xp, the computer is too fast??? for the program. Not sure if that makes any sense….but the programs I try to run, the screens flash right by.

    So here is the problem:

After re-installing windows 95 a window pops up saying setting up for first time use then goes to scan for plug and play options. Then the following pops up:

Msgsrv32 – this program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down

Close or Ignore are only options (either one you choose gives the following)

Msgsrv32 caused a general protection fault in module VGA.DRV at 0001:00000126

    Registers:

    05050000

    Then pops up:

    Mprexe
An error has occurred in your program

Close or ignore options again. Clicking either one will cause the computer to freeze.

I have tried to re-install many times and same problem.

    Please help.

    Thanks

    Hi!

I have run into these messages as well and it turned out to be that the new install of the OS was still using previous DLL files from before. Doing a complete Fdisk on the HD to totally clear it and reformat solved the problem. But you could try manually deleting all files in the windows/system folder via DOS mode from the win95 boot disk, then using the fdisk.exe from that same boot disk to reformat the HD. Not sure if this will work for your case, but if your new install isnt as fresh as it can be...errors can and do pop up like the ones you are experiencing.

As to running some older games and programs on today's considerably faster pc's, there are little utilities you can download that will allow you to run these games and programs via what is called "Dos-Box". It emulates a 486 pc on XP systems. There are also programs like "Mo-Slo" that will let you slow down the fast pc to run the older games at correct speeds. You can find alot of these utilities for the older games at the Wing Commander CIC website at this url....http://www.wcnews.com

On the right side of the page are tons of links to programs and utilities that will let the old and slow games run on even the fastest pc out there. My favorite is "Dos-Box", a no-nonsense emulator for games like Privateer, Wing Commander 1 thru 3, Armada, heck even the famous 3d game that started it all, Wolfenstein 3D will run on a 3Ghz pc running "Dos-Box", and run at its normal speed! Dos-Box incorporates a slow down function as well as other adjustments to fine tune the program.

    Happy gamming!

You bet! From what I understand, the author who wrote the "Dos-Box" program says it is a work in progress, but the current version should run most old Dos based programs and games.

So far I have not had any problems running older Dos games on a 2.3Ghz XP Pro system. A couple of the games still run kind of fast but the author is updating the program continously. Keep monitoring the author's website for the updates and news.
