      ok it looks like the hard drive that is the farthest back in the tower has the jumpers in the middle slot. the drive that is the farthest forward has it in the second two from the right as shown in the diagram.

          the farthest towards the back is at 5 and 6... i think. the farhtest one forward in the tower is 3 and 4

                the primary ide channel device 1 says pio mode but everything else is right.

                    what do you suggest. i tried unistalling it and reinstalling it but it doesn't change. i burn some this weekend off of the external i got and i watched them and they had no problems what so ever. i know this doesn't fix it but could my burner be bad.

                      your internal dvd burner might be bad, but using an internal hard drive in pio mode is very bad for burning to an internal drive

                        ok well i used my external hard drive to an external burner when i tried it last. would that fix it if i only used it that way.

                          anyway i was also wondering when i burnt the last few it took 13 mins. now it takes 2 13 minutes sessions. whats up with that.

                            well it turns out that when i use the internal hard drive it takes longer. when i use the external its shorter. still i was wondering if it would be ok when i use the external harddrive to the external burner

                              sure it will be OK, just burn real slow(4x) and don't try to do anything else and
                              make sure almost everything is shut down that might be running in the background

                              It would be better to have fixed that hard drive dma issue as using one external drive at a time has less system load and a greater chance of working right.
