    No Picture

I have reinstalled windows because of a BSOD.
    But now no videos work.
Before I had WMP 10 and FFDShow.
    Everything worked fine then.
Now I have WMP 11 Beta 2 (cannot get 10 ms site redirects me to 11 all the time) and FFDShow.
I get the sound but a blank screen.
Sometimes it is really faded like the contrast has been adjusted, which I checked btw.
So I uninstalled WMP 11 B2 and tried the plain old WMP 9.
    Still the same.

    Can anyone help?

    1. try playing with VLC, see if you get video

    2. get a recent build of ffdshow, from http://www.x264.nl or ffdshow-tryouts sourceforge page. out with the old, in with the new

    3. get latest directX

    4. latest graphics card drivers

Thanks for the quick reply, but what is VLC?

I did a google search for FFDShow and I downloaded the 2002 one from the sourceforge URL thing.
I guess this is bad and out of date?
I have never used the x264 site before.

Ok I have uninstalled the old FFDshow.
          Rebooted.
Installed the SSE2 from the x264 site.
Made sure my nvidia drivers were up to date. (they were already)
And still lost plays with in a faded kind of way.

VLC doesnt play the video either.
          Just the sound.

It applies to videos that worked before my reinstall, e.g Uni coursework videos.
          They were encoded in divx.

                  I have DirectX 9.0c
and I am using Windows XP SP2
                  It is a fresh install.
All I have installed is the XP updates, Norton, FFDShow, VLC and Firefox.

not a codec issue, moved to general computing. what graphics card?

right-click the desktop, properties, settings-->advanced-->troubleshoot. try lowering hardware acceleration a notch, see if you get dvd video in VLC; keep lowering if you don't.

You're going to kill me for this.
I went and checked the settings of my 6600GT.
Everything seemed fine, but half of the settings usually there were missing.
So I uninstalled the drivers, downloaded the 91.47 again.
                      And reinstalled.
Things seem to be fine now.
I am sincerely sorry for being a complete prat and not doing this in the first instance.
I thought because I had just reinstalled XP and the drivers were fresh, that there would be no issue.
I am switching to ATi as soon as I can afford it!

                      Thanks for all the help.

lol don't sweat it, we've all been there, nvidia's drivers are crap, but ATI's drivers look like crap (and are crap if you include ccc).

on a related note i just purchased a 7900GT a little while back, installed the 91.31 drivers. every time i booted the PC i got a tooltip in the system tray telling me my 2nd graphics card has been removed, i'm not getting as much performance as i should, and i should click the balloon for more info (which takes me to sli-zone.com, sli promotion). funny though i just paid $500 for that card, and never had SLI set up or a 2nd nvidia card. ever. never thought i'd see the day where adware was bundled in drivers.

been removed since due to all the angry complaints
