    press F4 to resume

In my nephew's PC , during boot up this message comes upRESS F4 TO RESUME. When F4 is pressed everything goes on fine. Why is this message coming up? Is there any way to stop it from appearing so that PC can boot up normally?

Can you go into the BIOS & configure it to boot without pressing F4?

It will say more than F4, what is it doing or say right before?

        might be smart drive?

were any hardware changes made to the computer?

It is on WinXP Pro. Single HDD and a CD Rom drive.
@ Chewy , you are right in saying that it says more than just PRESS F4.Actually the screen displays information about the PC( like Intel...,hard disc model etc.).At the end comes that F4 message. I can enter BIOS.But there I can find no option to enable/disable S.M.A.R.T. I have tried by restoring the default settings in BIOS, but to no avail. No hardware changes were made recently.

try to catch the bios post right before the F4 comes up with the pause break key and see if smart is mentioned

it can also be something else that's going bad? memory?

OK, I'll try this. Will be a while before I can let u know since it is not mine but my nephew's PC.
BTW,while I can find the SMART settings in the BIOS of my PC, I cannot see it in his.Where can it be?Any hidden option?Maybe his HDD does not have SMART support?

Is your nephew getting a message that "BIOS settings are not present and set to default" before that, if yes, most probably the Motherboard battery is dead and needs replacement, thats why its prompting you everytime he reboots the PC.

Nope.He is not getting such a message.Had the battery been dead, would the clock have given the correct time?

if the clock is giving the right time, battery is fine.
