problem using 2nd hard disc with DVDecryptor

I've just added a 2nd internal hard disc drive specifically to handle all my disc copying and bit torrent work (external Maxtor drive died after 9 months of bit torrenting).
Installation went sweetly and the new drive is formatted as a basic drive with NTFS file system and one primary partition.
It is recognised and seems to be fine, BUT...
DVDecryptor and NTI CD & DVD Maker 7 both work fine but run very slowly utilising the 2nd disc drive.
In DVDecryptor (when reading in ISO mode) the buffer is filling and emptying all the time and read speed is coming out about 1.4.
When writing in ISO mode the first buffer is not active at all and write speed is between 1 and 2.
I'm guessing I've set something up wrong - but can't find any hints as to what to do on the help system or via google.
When I had an external USB hard drive set up there were no such problems.
    Can anyone help me.

make sure dma is on for the drive and the drive is jumpered correctly,
    master/slave

all this is for regular ide hard drives and does not apply to serial/sata drives

Thanks chewy - total respect for spot on diagnosis.
However.... the cure doesn't work for me!!!!
Have also tried various other approaches to fixing the problem - following advice from other forums (fora?)... CDfreaks etc... including deleting the value from the appropriate registry entry.
The setting on the slave drive remains resolutely PI/O.
It's a western digital caviar 120gb drive - identical to the master and both are set to cable-select and the original drive is set at the end of the cable so that should all be aok.
Have you got any further ideas?
An extensive crawl around the net has not so far yielded any other approach.
really appreciate your suggestions so far.

if it's a dell you might have to enable dma in bios, cable select is problematic at best, western digital has special settings for master also(standalone and master with slave. I would only use master(end of cable and slave middle) myself. That's the standard way of doing things. I never have these problems except some old sis ide chipset that xp didn't have drivers for.

          Yep, it's a dell Dimension 8300.
          Uncanny ESP there.
Cable is connected as you indicate.
Can you say more about BIOS??

The only thing I know is 9 times out of 10 it's a dell and members report fixing the problem by going into bios and enabling dma on drives they add.

            Even with master slave setups.

                Hooooooooooooooooooooray

                sorted!!!!
in Bios (accessed via F2 at Dell splash screen)
                Drive Configuration
                Primary Slave set to 'OFF'
                change to 'AUTO'
                et voila!
Ultra DMA Mode 5 is selected for the slave and everything now works perfectly.
                A hundred thousand thanks Chewy.

and thanks for looking in NightTran

Chewy would this be the same for DVD Burners? I have had the same problems with DMA being enabled for my slave burner? If this is the same how do I go into BIO's to check that?
My computer is a Dell Dimension 3000.

dma problems and dell apply to optical drives also, make sure your drives are jumpered correctly, master/slave with right cable postions or cable select.

good luck, bios is something that's different on almost every model of computer
