pci controlled ide burner. master, slave or cable select?

How do I set my IDE burner, which is hooked up via PCI card to my SATA only motherboard, while another SATA burner is hooked up directly to the onboard port? The serial drive doesn't seem to have any exterior master/slave/cable settings like the parallel one does, so I don't know how to proceed.

the serial burner is plug and play(no settings) but some motherboards don't support them well or need special drivers

same problem with the cards and the atapi pata burner

real can of worms and that's gonna get worse as more of those new motherboards hit the market
