DMA-PIO and two Primary IDE Channels

I have a problem that's been driving me nuts. I have a SATA hard drive. DMA works fine (Ultra DMA Mode 5). I have a CD burner that works fine (Ultra DMA Mode 2). The problem is a DVD burner that won't stick on DMA and always reverts to PIO. That leads to 40 minute burns. I've searched endlessly and tried a number of suggestions, such as deleting the DVD burner and letting WinXP find and install it again. Nothing has worked. An additional complication, and one that makes it more difficult for me to safely attempt other changes, is that Device Manager tells me I have two primary IDE channels under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. They seem to be the CD and DVD burners. I have them both jumpered to Cable Select. I've deleted both the CD and DVD burner and allowed WinXP to reinstall them but they always come back as two primary IDE channels. This has led me to avoid registry changes since I'm not certain why I have the two primaries. Another confusion (to me, at least) is that my internal HD (I also have a USB external) is listed under the Secondary IDE Channel even though it's a SATA drive. It's also listed under Disk Drives. Is that a correct configuration? Any suggestions? I'm attaching the relevant parts of my Nero report.
