My cdrom has issues.

Hello,

I was sent over here, from another forum, b/c I'm having all kinds of trouble with my computer.

I want to start with this problem 1st.

I have a Gateway desktop computer, that is a little under 2 years old. I dont know the specific model number, but I'll find it, if needed.

I recently was given an Ipod as an early xmas present. I did everything it said, and downloaded Itunes to my desktop. I was going to attempt to start uploading my cds to my computer last weekend, when I ran into a problem.

My computer wont recognize, or play any of my cds anymore.

Cds, and dvds share the same drive. Whats weird is, the dvds will play without issue, but anytime I put a cd in, it completely locks up the computer, to where I have to restart. Every time, every cd.


It used to play cds fine. I'd put one in, and it'd auto-prompt me to see if I wanted to play it using windows media, music match, etc. Now it doesnt auto-prompt at all.

When I install a cd, and go to "my computer", it shows that there is an audio disc in, but when I right-click, and hit play it locks up.

I dont know what to do. All I want to do is upload my music.

I've tried every response that I was given, but nothing has changed.

I was hoping to maybe get some more help here.


If anyone has any suggestions, please dumb down the answers as much as you can.

welcome to the forum

steve was doing fine, remove the drive from device manager then reboot

there are a few advanced things we can do but make sure you have tried all the easy suggestions first

read my sticky on power user here and learn the 3 finger salute

also try to exit out of any crap running down next to the clock and speaker icon

your drive may be going bad but you could also have 2 softwares fighting over regular music cd's

I'm gonna give that a shot. I tried removing it once, but you've added an extra step to the process. I didnt log out of everything down by the clock.

well you have supplied the clues to show it's probably software related?

bad news it gets hairy now,
roxio, gear and musicmatch, all based on the sonic engines are probably
corrupt and causing deeper issues

So my whole computer might be screwed up? Are we talking "whole computer needs to be replaced" screwed up?

cleaning those filters out of the registry usually fixes a lot of these problems, as you can see windows can even lose drives from this kind of thing

a clean install(reinstall) of factory software can start you out messed up
when they load a lot of crap software, it's a job even then to fix it

that's the main advantage to having a custom built and load computer

Well, that sounds like your leaning towards a "yes" to my questions...That doesnt make me happy.


I'm trying to run that "guided help". It acts like it wants to download it, but then it comes up with an error, that says invalid URL. I signed in, like it said, and I'm running window XP home edition. It says those are the only requirements.
It's not looking good.
