    Collapsed Programs

I'm trying to help one of my brothers with a major problem. He tried to play a DVD in his PC and the drive failed to read the DVD. The PC kept bringing up "not responding" errors in a lot of software so I suggested a reboot. That was done but the DVD was still in the drive. When the PC was booting up, the bit with the black screen and white writing, it stayed like that for too long and the DVD was just rotating non-stop and there was a clicking sound coming from the drive. It took quite a long time to go further but when the Desktop came up, most of the shortcut icons had no design and about nine messages came up asking to choose a program for each one that leads to the Choose Program window. When I clicked on All Programs, most of the other software has no design in the icons and the same message appears when any of those programs are double clicked on. It seems as if most of the software is disconnected. Also, Windows Explorer kept appearing and as fast as I was closing it, it kept coming back as if I was being booted.

Later, a message appeared and it had strange characters as a title with some squares in it.

Does anybody know how to fix this or does it require a format?

    Many thanks.

    Darren.

I would probably try a system restore first, before a reformat.

I tried that and System Restore is disconnected like the other software. When I chose System Restore, the Choose Program box appeared.

      Many thanks.
