    Writing avi files to cd-r

I have a Sony DCR TRV270E (Hi8) camera. It records brilliantly, and I can get the files onto my pc using the usb stream. Once on the pc, the movies play back well.
I want to be able to send people small video clips (of their cars I am restoring) and I thought putting them onto a cd-r would be easy.
I send the avi files to cd rewriter, and the quality is like a mobile phone.
I converted the avi files to divX using a converter program. This makes the image a bit better.
I am using a usb lead from camera to pc, would an Ieee cable improve matters.
Is there something else I can do to improve the cd quality?
    Thankyou!
