    New Pc Problems

    Guys please advice.

I scanned my PC with AVG spyware and after the scan I found a number of infections. I chose delete. After this i couldnt start media player because a file was missing and when i reboot i get a message that file rundll couldnt load yada yada yada

Obviously I am now missing a number of files on my PC which means my stystem could be unstable.

The only backup I did was with acronis which is a bit unfriendly for me to use at a stage. Is there another alternative to add missing files without restoring or should I just continue to use the PC and add files only when programmes do not work?

    Please let me know

    Phillip,

    I have been following along on your other threads, & have seen that you have been encountering several problems. If it were me, I know what I would do;

    (1) Revert back to an acronis backup that you know is stable.
    (2) System Restore to an earlier date, maybe back to the first restore point listed.
    (3) Reformat, start over fresh with a clean install of windows.

I personally would prefer the latter. It looks to me like you are chasing down problem after problem, with several possible infections, spy/malware more. In the end, you will have spent a lot of time on doing this and you will have a "patched up" version of windows at best, which will still probably haunt you will errors from time to time.

A reformat may not be appealing if you have limited pc experience, but it may be the only real way to get a stable computing enviroment. Take down plenty of notes before attempting a reformat, ask questions, & above all, back up any critical data that may not be replaceable.

    Good Luck in your choice!
    Regards, katz

I agree Katz thanks. i think part of the problem is that I dont stop tinkering and fiddling on my PC because I want to be like you and Chewy. I want to get it and I figure if I am on it then I will get it. This makes spending on time

For now I will revert to 1 or 2. Then I will run power set up again. After that I will start taking notes on reformating just for the fun of it and to get better. You guys must be here to help though

        Thanks

it may also be a good idea to backup your registry.
just incase of any future problems.

I would reformat and start over too. It may seem like a big job Philip, but once you get it all setup and tweak it again with what you have been learning, you should have a nice stable system.

@phillip.you sure these missing files have been deleted ?
              they might have been quarantined.
in which case you can restore them.

You could try a OS repair with XP to replace deleted files if they were system files and try reinstalling the programs that are messed up. Good Luck

Only clean install would be really helpful. It's a bad idea to do a system restore, coz you restore all your spyware too

I know what kind of hassle it is to do a clean install. There are ways in between though. Can you post the infections found by AVG. Bear in mind that AVG so now and than has "false positivies ".

Do NEVER choose delete but quarantaine, in that way you can do a research on the files whether you need them yes or no.

                    Please do the following :
Download and scan with SUPERAntiSypware Free for Home Users

                    * Double-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
                    * An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
                    * If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Udates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here.)
                    * When done, select "Scan for Harmful Software".
                    * There are three scanning options. Choose "Perform Complete Scan" and click "Next".
                    * When done, a Scan Summary will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
                    * Make sure they all have a checkmark next to them and click "Next".
                    * A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
                    * Click Preferences and then click the statistics/logs tab.
                    * Click the dated log and press View log. A text file will appear so you can see the results.
                    * Select close to exit the program.
                    * Scan in SAFE MODE

After that, download DrWeb-CureIt & save it to your desktop. DO NOT perform a scan yet.

Reboot your computer in SAFE MODE using the F8 method.

                    Scan with DrWeb-CureIt as follows:

                    * Double-click on drweb-cureit.exe to start the program. An "Express Scan of your PC" notice will appear.
                    * Under "Start the Express Scan Now", Click "OK" to start. This is a short scan that will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the Yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it.
                    * Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
                    * Choose the "Scan tab" and UNcheck "Heuristic analysis"
                    * Back at the main window, click "Select drives" (a red dot will show which drives have been chosen)
                    * Then click the "Start/Stop Scanning" button (green arrow on the right) and the scan will start.
                    * When done, a message will be displayed at the bottom advising if any viruses were found.
                    * Click "Yes to all" if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
                    * When the scan has finished, look if you can see the icon next to the files found. If so, click it, then click the next icon right below and select "Move incurable".
(This will move it to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if it can't be cured)
                    * Next, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list.
                    * Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.
                    * Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.
                    * Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.

Please post the reports in here.

After you have posted the reports we take the next step
