Fried my Power supply today! YAY!

first of all, i deserve to be shot for this absent mindedness. No matter how hard i try to blame someone else, i can't. it's all my dumbass fault. yesterday the power company put a note in the mail box saying they will cut off power for 3 hours in the morning for "improvements" (which turned out to be a replacement of a hydro pole).

Like usual i had projects i wanted to process overnight, so i decided not to shut it off last night. "do it first thing" i thought. like a bonehead i FORGOT and the power was cut out (bonus: NO surge suppressor). when i came home i smell "burnt motor" smell - not good. sure enough, the bastard wouldn't turn on and the exhaust area of the power supply just reeked of fried wires.

i gotta guy comin in friday with a couple power supply's and a new MB and CPU just in case. now i have to use this POS for the next two days. i could just spit i'm so pissed off at myself. When Mrs. Columbo comes home i'm going to tell her to punch me right in the mouth - i deserve it.

Anyway it's a 350 Watt "elitech" i think is the name. is this a POS? what (IYO) are the chances of further damage besides the PS? when the power went out during a couple storms last summer a few times there was no harm, maybe it finally had enough...

So, i'll be getting one or all of these parts this weekend and a surge suppressor. i knew i should have installed one of these but some folks say it isn't nec. I'll update as things happen.

I would recommend getting an UPS instead of a surge protector. That way if there is a brown out you will not have any problems.

turning the power off shouldn't fry components, wonder what they did when they turned it back on? overvolted probably

watch for local sales, they are heavy and expensive to ship

many are protected with fuses, the best way to go

It is an interruptible power supply. What it does is it supplies 120 Vac to your computer when the power goes out or keeps the voltage stable at 120 Vac when there is brown outs. Go to apc.com for a more detailed description.

                          LT,
have you thought of trying to turn it in to the power company. I know that here in the Chicago area will pay for power surge damage. They repaired a 36'' Sony TV for me after a power surge killed the power supply.
