Flash Drives

I was just at the computer store (yes I got to drive LOL), and I bought some more Verbatim discs, as I was low. They also had a sale on 2GB flash drives, for $12.99 (store brand). I bought one just for fun.

The problem is, it's either incredibly slow or my computer is messed up. I can transfer one large file easily, but when I copy directories with, say, logfiles, even though each text file is only 30kb, it takes a long time to copy.

Is this common in USB flash drives? If it's really that bad I'll give it to my sisters, as they thought it looked cool, but if it's common I won't sweat over it.

they will be slower than copying on the HDD but just check if your PC is using USB 2.0 drivers and its enabled in the BIOS also.

Yes, in some of the cheaper brands. Different makes have different sequential/random read/write speeds.

Edit: BTW the more files you have, the longer it will take, no matter how small. Transferring 30,000 documents/images even from one SATA drive to another can take a while.

anytime you create folders with thousands of files you have problems, windows has to sort them and keep track of their location

when dealing with large collections of mp3's or digital karaoke files I always
break them up into smaller folders

You can use HD Tune to benchmark the pendrive. If you have more than one, you can also compare various pendrives for speed

It is a free software, and it is also portable, i.e. it doesn't require any installation, but can be run directly like cd-dvd speed

Hey did I say they were music files? LOL

I have stuff like HTML files that have all the user images in the _files folder, that's a bunch of files, but they aren't music

size is not the issue(mp3's vs smaller files)

it's the sheer number of files

So if I were to transfer that same number of files to another hard drive, it would have the same speed?

larger with same number of files per folder would be slower, but also consider usb drives are fat32
