    Windows 2000 Pro

My Windows 2000 Pro is now getting on a bit. I want to preserve this OS for future use so have decided I need a back up copy of the disc, before it fails me completely.

What's the best software for the job please? Have looked at Nero but get a copyright warning followed by a failed to copy.

I want to reiterate, this is for my own personal use.

what service pack is on your w2k disk?

in the trade we make slipstreamed install cd's using microsoft approved methods, actually their reccomended procedure

the reason MS came up with slipstreaming(google) service packs was a lot of corporate computers running W2k sp4 when the original install cd was used as a repair disk, would not even boot

A lot of IT professionals were po'd to say the least

In a slipstreaming operation you down load an administrative service pack
then put the CD cab files on your hard drive and using commands built into
W2k sp4 or later make a new OS cd that's fully updated.

that old original cd should always be saved with your serial numbers and coa, but never used after
        making a new cd

there's even a program that automates a lot of this, anony has a link?

it's actually one of the "round to its" I have been meaning to do, I would like to add some drivers to my install cd's

                Hi guys,

Just to let you know things are going fine so far!

I'm up to the "Hotfixes, Addons and Update packs" section on nLite and just checked all the auto updates I have downloaded so far..... 202!!!

Now trying to decide which to save for adding to the SP4 disk.

Could the ones chosen be added from the winnt folder or such like, to save having to download them again?

since you will be using sp4, there are a lot less since then, but after looking at
the guide, I wouldn't worry about them since you will have to find each at the ms web site and for your use I wouldn't bother, just make sure you are behind a firewall router when you first connect to the internet and use windows update when doing a clean install from the slipstreamed cd

Will do Chewy. Lot less hassle!

Now to finish off. Will let you know the end result, but I'm not anticipating any problems! (Touch wood)

Well that seems to have gone ok!

I inserted the cd and checked out if it would give the usual options. Everything seemed ok until I noticed that it was offering updates/install to Win 2000! Will it make any diference that my original was Win 2000 PRO?

I don't remember seeing any options in nLite for the Pro version.

win 2000 was just pro, except for the server editions

there was no home edition, we had w98 and winME for that

Well I suppose the test will come when I get my new (second hand) laptop!

I think things will be ok.
May need to tweak the CD, but very happy so far!

Many thanks for you help Chewy!

And thank you anonymez for your link!
