    Back in the early 90s I had some fun messing with PovRay. A Ray Trace generator thingy. Some people created some cool art with it that you may still be able to find as desktop wallpaper. The software is still out there:

    I tried to figure out GIMP. Had a great teacher too, and I was still clueless! That's how I found Apophysis. Go figure

    Fractint
    MBF Lite

    And announcing the Apophysis-j for Macs and Linux ...

    I have not used Fractint, but FE and MBF are relatively easy to maneuver around in.
