Removing old hard drive and installing different issues

I have removed an old hard drive and am putting in a different one.
This one is used but has much more memory than the old one.
When I start up the pc it will not pick up the drive.. Any help would be wonderful.
I just assumed that I could take one out and putin the next and everything would resume.

you will have to initialize the drive first before windows will see it

partition and format are the key terms involved

make sure the jumpers are set the same as the old one(master/slave/cableselect) and that your computer and bios support the larger drive size
