Anyway I'm going to just buy a drive and replace the internal. Which leads to yet another question. What's the difference between the sata and the ide drives? Does anyone have any opinions or reasons to get one or the other?
Well I'm no computer wiz, but I'll take a stab at it. Sata is newer techonolgy and IDE is older and will probably be phased out eventually. Sata has a faster rate of data transfer than IDE, when using IDE try to use the shortest cable possible. If your planning on using Sata be sure your Mobo has the connections for it. Depending on the age of your computer you may not have them.

        Thanks Guys!

I figured it's not a great drive considering this is the 2nd one gone bad since I bought it in Dec, 04. I'm already looking for a replacement. Just gotta figure out which one. This one had lightscribe but I'm not so sure that doesn't add to it's demise so I think I'll skip it on the next one.

As far as the Sata vs Ide I'll have to check. For some reason I think I have the Sata. Seems like Chewy was helping me with some kind of burner problem once and sata was brought up. I'll have to look that up.

Thanks Chewy, you know thats the drive I use, well I guess I just got lucky with mine. With many, many burns to it's credit, I still get good test results from it.

Sorry to hear about your drive Smky, if I recall correctly they replaced it for you the first time, right?

It may be not at the right voltage. And yes you do have to open the case in order to test the voltage.

Yep, they did the first time and they would have this time but they wanted me to do the system recovery first before they would honor the warranty. "In case it was a software issue"

Yes, I could have done the recovery but call me lazy, I didn't think the work involved getting everything backed up (cause I haven't done that in a while ) and retrieving all the programs was worth it. I'd rather just by a new drive and save myself the trouble. I fought with them about it but I lost. But I did have fun arguing with them and telling them I'd never buy their extended warranty again!

Mine had many burns also, both of them.

I'll keep that in mind. I need to really spend some time looking. Maybe I'll check out newegg.

I don't have one but you can read the reviews from Newegg...

Costs only $27.99 also, and shipping to you is probably minimal...

If I remember right, we were looking at your IDE channels , dual channel right?
You might have two IDE slots on your motherboard, with only one slot being used right now which the optical drives attached to it.
And you might also have two SATA slots as well, with one slot having your harddrive attached to it, and the other slot empty.

If so, save that SATA slot for another harddrive and use the IDE channel you're using to install your new DVD-RW onto.
Optical drives can't benefit from SATA bus architecture yet because the drive speeds haven't come close to achieving the speeds that SATA and SATA II can offer.
My IDE Sony DRU-810 is far faster than my SamSung SATA Burner, but one thing I'm sure of is that the SATA SamSung can burn safely at 18X without any issues...

BTW, my motherboard has only one IDE slot and 6 SATA (3.0 GB/s) slots, so that's why I got the SamSung SATA burner, I already attached two drives to the IDE cable..

I hope that someday soon the SATA drives become far faster and will be reading and burning at higher speeds much cleaner...
I also have two external eSATA ports so that I can attach SATA external harddrives...Faster and I'm sure cleaner than USB or Firewire....lol

Hey Mikey! I read the reviews and like all reviews some good, some bad. It's cheaper at newegg but of course the Walmart version had all the cords, ect..... I really have liked my lite-on external tho. You lost me on the next post. Way over my head I think. I'll have to read that again.

                                voltages rails look fine

                                +3.3 V 3.37 V
                                +5 V 5.13 V
                                +12 V 11.94 V
12 volt maybe a little weak

you can also try the dvd burner on another power connector as a test?
