    adding more ram

We've gone over this before, but I had a question from a PM about it and thought I would start a new thread

first download everest home free edition

EVEREST Home Edition is a freeware system information, system diagnostics and benchmarking solution for home PC users, based on the award-winning EVEREST Technology....

since this program is no longer updated it will work best with computers at least a year or more old.

Under computer and overclock you need to find this information(using my older computer as an example)

Motherboard Name Asus A7N8X v2.0 Deluxe (5 PCI, 1 AGP Pro, 3 DDR DIMM, Dual LAN, IEEE-1394)

    Chipset Properties:
Motherboard Chipset nVIDIA nForce2 Ultra 400
    Memory Timings 2-3-3-6 (CL-RCD-RP-RAS)
    Command Rate (CR) 1T

    SPD Memory Modules:
    DIMM1: GeIL CL2-3-3 Ultra-400 256 MB PC3200 DDR SDRAM (2.0-3-3-6 @ 200 MHz)
    DIMM3: GeIL CL2-3-3 Ultra-400 256 MB PC3200 DDR SDRAM (2.0-3-3-6 @ 200 MHz)
from this we can tell I am using 2 of my 3 memory slots, I could add a stick of
premium ddr 3200 cas 2 and lose dual channel or pull my existing sticks and
    add 2 larger sticks

conclusion: not cost effective to upgrade this box

looks like a good cpu(skt 939) but cheap ram

you could add 2 more sticks of slow ram

or even pull the old ram and add some fast

since that's not a gamer computer I would assume you do video encoding and are running windows xp?

if so a gig should be fine, I would pull the old stuff and just go with 2 512's of the faster ram

a lot of mobos run better only with 2 sticks

going from cas 3 @ 512 to cas 2 @ a gig should help multitasking and heavy duty video work

                  what's your cpu?

yes i do alot of encoding and i run windows xp. i also like to multitask while i am encoding etc so i need something that would help that out as well.

cpu is short for central proccessing unit right? where would i find that

If all else fails, some (mine included...lol) have a sticker right on the front of their computer tower that says the CPU speed. It's in Megahertz (MHz).

I've bought Kingston brand ram in the past and liked it very much. I have tried a few cheaper brands and have had problems...

                              little confusing?

CPU-Z for Windows® x86/x64 is a freeware that gathers information on some of the main devices of your system : Processor name and number, codename, process, package, cache levels. Mainboard and chipset. Memory type, size, timings, and module specifications (SPD). Real time measurement of each core's internal frequency, memory frequency. CPU-Z is fully supported on Windows® 11. The CPU-Z‘s detection engine is now available for customized use through the CPUID System Information Development Kit, a professional SDK built for the Microsoft Windows & Android.

wonder if the cool and quiet drivers are giving bogus multiplier and Mghz readings for the cpu

since you only have a single core I would just add better ram and test with and without the old stuff, it would be better with a lamer cpu in an older computer

going to 2 gigs or even 1 1/2 is not going to help a lot with only 1 core

                              faster ram will help
