Referenced memory - The memory could be read error

Hp laptop here again;
Specs:
HP Compaq 6715b
Windows XP Pro Version 2002/SP2
IE 7

The website specs differ slightly; My cpu is 1.60 GHZ/896 MB Ram.

I am getting a "Referenced memory - The memory could be read error". Found many answers on the net', also on Microsoft.com, in which they say to update with the latest windows updates. Did that, no change, still getting the error.

It happens at different times; when I close I.E., another is a "MOM.EXE" read error, which has to do with the ATI Catalyst driver suite? Tech support is no help, anyone on here have any suggestions?

Would like to get this annoying thing solved!

I don't see anything listed like "sp35359.exe " from the link that you posted.

Just got off the phone w/ tech, they had me change the driver to that one you listed, still didn't change the prob. Now he thinks there is something wrong w/ the HD (bad sector) & has me running checkdisk...

Interesting read; The general consensus is that everyone agrees it is a monitoring thing built into the driver, but no real clear cut answer on what to do with it. Mine is also throwing CCC.exe errors, & I saw CCC mentioned. The tech had me remove the ati driver, & installed the one Chewy linked to, but we still continued to get that error & others as well. All refer to "The referenced memory......memory could not be read".

This is on a laptop for school use, provided by the school, so after they couldn't fix it over the phone, & also thru remote connection & with the connectivity issues I have been having in the other thread, tech support now decided the HD is bad, so we are sending it back for a new HD to be installed.

Maybe they will get smart & install the Omega drivers & stay away from ati...

I noticed on another thread you had some doubts about your video card.
If something hardware is funky you can get weird errors as the
system picks up that somethin' ain't jivin'(the technical term for the malady.)


I'm wondering too do you ever notice more errors when the system has been used for a longer period? Funky hardware often works ok for a while then when it warms up a bit you get erroneous stuff happenin'. See if you can get the techs to do some tests while they have the machine. Like if they can reproduce the errors but they go away when they spray cold air
on the card etc..

Well, as I mentioned, this is a (cyber) school provided pc, so when we send it back, I'm not really sure what all they will do with it, as far as testing goes. My gut feeling is that they will "get it in, get it out" with a minimum of fussing with it. Sorry, I don't have a lot of faith in the system... I was monitoring HD temps with HD tune, & they were around 40-45 C most of the time. I personally feel that it really may be an install issue; We only received it around a week ago, & when I was looking thru the logs on the pc, I noticed application hang & other errors dating back to June, the dates when they were loading the stuff on the pc...

I feel that they just rushed a lot of the pc's thru just to get them done & out the door. But if they would have taken the time to run them, they would have seen these issues beforehand. I mean, the mom.exe error pops up as soon as it is finished booting!

Another thing is, they have proprietary software on here that is custom designed to keep kids from poking around too much with the system. IE 7 browser for example, is missing all of the menu functions at the top. Pretty much all you have is the address bar & buttons...what's up with that?!?!

I would also assume the school has placed some type of hidden keylogger or tracking software on it, to monitor the kids movements, since we're given a list of "do's & dont's" on what to install, etc.

However, the tech support guy was pretty cool on the phone; He encouraged me to try to troubleshoot on my own, & if I came up with anything that fixed it, let him know, as they were having the same type issues with quite a few of the other pc's as well. In talking with the tech guy for awhile, I discovered that he actually runs linux on 3 pc's at home & said he wouldn't recommend M$oft products to anyone!

have to reinstall everything. Might work the 2nd time around!

Yeah, I'm thinking sabotage would be the thing here; that way they would be sure to fix it all. Maybe a trip into the registry would be the ticket...
