    Need advice on new HDD

I am looking into getting a new hard drive.

My board has SATA 1.5 GBS and I prefer keeping SATA.

    My questions are.

Can I use a HDD rated 3.0 GBS on my board in case I upgrade?

Is one brand better than the other?

I am looking at 250 GB range. Thinking of partitioning 25 GB for OS and the rest for storage. Good idea?

If it matters I will be keeping XP.

    Thank You for your input.

I will start w/ this one. Some drives have a jumper on them that you can set at 1.5 or 3.0; Both of my seagates have this. They are sata drives, work beautiful. Mine are both 250, & are partitioned around 30 gb., on the windows pc anyway. I have never had a prob. w/ seagates, even after I dropped one on a hard floor from table height!

    Just my .02

      Thanks for chipping in.

Definately gives me more direction than I had before.

I have a 250GB Maxtor thats 4 years old that gets to 160 degrees F in less than an hour.

      Time for a change.

Thanks to your input I'll be considering this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148262

Unless someone gives me a good reason not to by Monday.

Here's my vote for that drive! It does support 1.5 & 3.0 SATA, I see. Don't forget to check the jumper setting when you receive it.

Also, I believe Master Chewy likes Seagate drives, so that is a bonus around here!

katz, it's getting deep in here

burrell, that's free shipping which makes the deal, but those deals are here today and goon tomorrow

btw here's the deal of the week if you don't mind rebates

            Chewy Katz is right!!

Your opinion is golden around here.

Now I have your input as well as Katz, the decides it.

BTW I HATE rebates, They always seem to get misplaced, or I space mailing them in. And I would prefer an internal drive.

Newegg is still my store, I'll get on that.

            Thanks Guys

my seagate internals are abused daily and still going strong after 2 years

that 5 year warranty is what sold me especially after my maxtor 160 blew up and they gave me the run around on replacing it

I hates rebate also, never can remember/bother to send then in

                Maxtor 7Y250M0 Here.

Now down to 39C with case open and big box fan on high.

Seems like Seagate is the leader these days.

you might look into optimizing air flow thru your case

what's your motherboard temp without fan and case closed?

38-40C Only the HDD was hot at 72C
Bought a used computer for my wife. I Had 80GB she got 250GB in hers so I traded.

Turns out thats when everything went to crap, I suspect bad HDD.

Thats what happens when greed kicks in I guess.

                        Central Utah. By Sundance.

Okay what temps do I need to achieve? MB? Processor? and HDD?

I'll shut down the Big fan, put the cover back on and see what happens in an hour. 77F here now.
