      *cough*
      $%$#$ Penguin!
      *cough*

      ...not my words...

Seriously though, as Chewy stated, sounds like an internal prob. from the factory. Another thing does come to mind though; The HD may be formatted for linux, since that is what the pc was designed? for from the start, so you would need to reformat the HD to NTFS file system. instead of the ext3 file system. I may be off here, but something points me in that direction...

might need a heavy duty penguin exterminator

Active@ KillDisk Freeware vs. Active@ KillDisk Professional. Data erasing software for home office.

            tempting isn't it katz?

IIUC, the file format will have to be recognizable to windows so the install can begin. I wonder if he would d/l gparted & burn to disc on another pc, & then use gparted on this one to format to NTFS.

I don't think those big guns are necessary, even though penguins have thick layer of insulating feathers

That is what I think I would be tempted to try, it can't hurt.
Anony, UncasMS would be the "go to" guys on this one...

Is the windows xp a upgrade disk or full install disk?
                You raise the blade,
                You make the change,
You rearange me till I'm sane.
You lock the door, throw away
                the key,
                There's someone in my head
                and it's not me.

yes he will haveta hose off Linux format as winblows wont see the etx3 format therefore it doesnt see anything

RE-Format the drive using any old floppy/cd system disc

or DL the trial for Acronis Disk Director and fry the EXT3 Part with a Acornis Disk Director Rescue Disk

Katz I think for him trying to use gparted will cornfuse him

ok,i almost forgot to write what was the problem, anyways seems that the dvd/cd-rom was damaged and it would only read dvds, when i got vista (on a dvd) i installed it and tried to burn a normal cd (black traxdata) it couldnt find the blank media in the drive, then i tried with blank sony, same problem, but the funny thing is that when i hit cancel in nero it burned that sony, but it wouldnt read it as well
