Passive cooled GPU - worth it?

I'm thinking about building a new computer using the passive cooled version of the 8800 GT with the goal to reduce the overall noise of the system. However, since the 8800 GT is quite a powerful GPU, will this cause stability problems on a hot day? Or perhaps it will just make the case fans spin faster, and therefore, cause more noise?

By all accounts the fan cooled version of the 8800 GT is not all that noisy, so I was just wondering if the passively cooled version is worth it for noise reduction purposes.

large low rpm cpu and case fans are the secret to a quieter computer

I wouldn't trust a passive setup, especially with gaming and hot weather

if the case is super cooled, maybe?

the new g92 seems to be able to handle higher temperatures than its predecessors so passive versions (like the sparkle COOL-PIPE 3) should be fine but you'll need decent case cooling

on the other hand the zalman gpu fans do quite a good job and they are not as noisy as standard cooler

i have one working on my 7900 and i prefer it to the standard solution but the new 8800gt design seems to be less noisy than older vga

Thanks for the tips. The good news is everything is better than my current setup, which sounds like a small airplane that's struggling to take off.

I'm getting ready for a whole bunch of games that, on my current system, looks more like a slideshow than a game
