HELP Internal Drive in External Case Problem!

I have a Maxtor 120gb internal in an external case. This drive was working great until it was transfered to another external case called a mediaLAN. Now when the drive is connected to the computer it comes up as a unknown device. The device manager says no driver is installed for this drive now.

I tried to update the driver with no luck, i then connected this drive to the internal drive on my computer as a slave and the drive works prefectly. When i connect back into either of the external cases the original which worked or the new one same problem the device is unregonised.

PLEASE PLEASE HELP ANY IDEAS WHATS GOING ON WOULD BE GREAT

doublecheck the cables and connectors, try more than one with each case

go slow and make sure it's not a bad usb port(dirt?)

odds are both cases aren't bad

Argghhh!! Ain't it a killer how many times they don't even check continuity
on those things? I remember when I bought and expensive VCR years ago I
paid through the nose to get the "Monster" cables to go with
it.

I ended up just using the coax output because I couldn't get
any audio through the composite cables. Turns out the cables were
defective. For my DVD players I went online to the "cheap" cables
outfit and got several component cable sets. They all work great
for 1/3 the price!! Sheesh!!
(I dunno' was this supposed to go in the rant group?)

Thanks for the replies.

I've tried different usb port my computer has 8 and three cables all with the same effect. I've since managed to try this drive in the external case on a mates computer and it fired up like a dream.

Is it possible that i deleted something or something has gone corrupt on my machine? Can't thing what it could be though! My head hurts!

Any ideas gratefully appreciated!

What I would suggest, if your friend would help you out.. try
booting his machine using a Linux Live or some other boot CD
with USB support and your drive hooked up. If you can see
your drive running from that CD, do the same test on your
own machine. Depending if it can see the same drive hooked
to your hardware that should narrow it down as either a hw
or sw issue. Then you can go to the next step.

Just an update.

Problem sorted looks like i managed to pull our the usb cable whilst my drive was being accessed and that ment something went hay wire with the driver. I unplugged the machine from the mains for 5 mins booted back up and problem solved.

Why is it that its the simplest cures thats we always think of last!

well those drives are cheap, if you keep doing that you'll need a new one very soon

those safely remove icons have a purpose, preventing voltage surges upon disconnect
