Also to be noted is that AVG Anti-Spyware will no longer be supported as a standalone product after the end of the year. The anti-spyware product will be bundled into AVG anti-virus 8.0. Those who purchased two-year licenses for AVG-AS or, even worse, lifetime licenses, and who currently use an anti-virus superior to AVG anti-virus, (that covers a lot of territory) will have no recourse unless they want to downgrade to AVG anti-virus in order to have access to AVG's anti-spyware product. Frankly, I think that would be pointless as AVG-AS is no longer the product it once was... so, it would make no sense to downgrade to AVG-AV in order to keep using a defanged AVG-AS. Those who were concerned that Grisoft only purchased ewido in order to destroy it have been proven right.
don't say you weren't warned, they trial a good product then marketing and profit take over

      what else is new?

that's the problem they are like wormholes into your computer for old java based vulnerabilities to exploit

the old ones are still active unless you uninstall them

I took all the java anything out of add/remove then clean installed after rebooting

Chewy should I get rid of the
            Java(TM) 6 update 2
Java(TM) 6 update 3 or should I let them stay.

I understand that I should get rid of
            Java 2 runtime enviroment and
            J2SE runtime environment

but I am not sure about the Java(TM)6 update 2 and update 3.

all of them should be uninstalled, but download the new standalone first, it's big

then after downloading to your desktop do the uninstall then reboot and install the new one

Won't download thru SDM? I increased the number of tries to 20. Ran the download attempt 4 times 80 tries and the download failed. Very frustrating.

                    re: Chewy

Tried to download without SDM just before reading your last reply Chewy.
It worked this time without using SDM. So now onto deleting the other entries and installing. One thing I know for sure I can always count on you Chewy to help out with the problems that I have had. Thank you

Hi Chewy. Check this out. I noticed I had 2 Spybot Search And Destroy proggies in my add/remove progam list. 1 was double the size of the other. I uninstalled the small one thinking that I probably downloaded 2 versions. Bottom line I couldn't find the corresponding icon to the remaining Spybot in my quick launch. Just the older icon. Looked for it all over and nothing. So I couldn't open it, so I thought, because the remaining quick launch icon was totally different. Well fact is I uninstalled that 1 also. Now installing it again shouldn't be a problem. My ? is when a program is updated or w/e, can you safely delete the older 1 if it's still in your system w/out it affecting the newer 1? I saw this way back w/1 click where it would update it and the older version would still be in my add/remove list. Since Spybot has that SD helper integrated into my browser do I have to check somewhere else on my pc to do a complete uninstall? Or would the uninstall w/add/remove plus reg clean up w/Cclean and a manual delete of any folders I found do a complete uninstall so I could go and do a clean reinstall w/out any problems?

It's unbelieveable that Java won't uninstall the old versions.

And yes, you need to uninstall anything that says Java first and reboot. Then in the Java CPL applet, turn off auto updates - you can check for these manually anyway and when you find one, uninstall the old and download the new.

It's useful also after all that removing and installing to run Crap Cleaner or Registry Mechanic to get rid of remnants. But uninstalling will at least delete all the old folders in %appdata%

                        Regards

I did some testing over at one of the malware forums for this, spybot writes a new install over the old one but leaves an orphan entry in the uninstall list

either ignore it or uninstall the old before installing the new

Is there an uninstaller .exe 4 Spybot like there is 4 Avast? I went to Bleeping Computers but didn't find anything.
