I have mce 2005 on my dell. Would I be able to slipstream sp3? I see you mentioned sp3 could be slipstreamed over mce.

yes u can, few ppl had some problems with cmpnents folder, if u get that problem, slipstream without that folder and later add that folder again.

do try with that folder on first, u may waste one dvd-r in process

ok. here's the deal. I tried to make a generic disc of xp mce 2005 w/sp3 slipstreamed and I did it, but it wouldn't install on my dell. made a couple of versions. a couple I removed components and the last 1 I left intact and just slipstreamed sp3. now I got w/the dell techs cause of my contract and they couldn't figure it out either. Mind you I didn't say it was a custom install. Anyway they offered me a new hd and it's on order. Thing is I just finished loading the real oem alone and then manually slipstreamed sp3 and bingo it went through like butter. An all day affair. No biggie it rained mostly all day.

Now can you suggest anyway I could make that generic disk to work w/sp3 slipstreamed? Btw xp mce 2005 is the same as xp pro except 4 all the added junk. I couldn't even put it on a cd it was so large a file. Even after cutting some stuff out.

The error I would get is that my system didn't recognize it as a geniune xp version for my dell. That w/a pita intel pro driver that just wouldn't install. All the drivers did install after I did it w/the original oem disc and the driver utilities cd from dell. Can dell be that secure w/detecting some foreign system on their pre-builds? Any info leading to a solution is always appreciated. I'm thinking about calling the order off as I just finished setting up my pcs w/proggies and antivirus, etc... Then again a new hd don't sound that bad. Even though I heard rumors they sold refurbished hardware. Tech told me that they have to label their parts as refurbished cause they're not the original manufacturers? They buy n resell it in their pre-builds.

No rush but the new hd should b here by Wed. or Thurs. Mood point probably as even w/the new drive I could try installing it again. Btw I used nlite.

That's cool. Are you making a custom or just running it through as is. In any case I'm eager to see what your result is. I totally forgot about your suggestion regarding the components folder. Maybe I'll kill some time also b4 they bring the new hd and see if I could get it to work as a custom w/sp3. Thnx atifsh.

You know even when I put the original to finally install, it never asked me for my product key. That seem stranged. The 1st couple of times w/the custom it did ask me but I confused b's w/8's. Getting older. Lol...

I did it atifsh. Just copy these files from the original oem and paste them into the i386 folder slipstreamed install of mce:MEDTROC.DL, MEDTROC.IN, MEDIACTR.CA, PLUGIN.OC, PLUS.CA, PLUS OC.DL, PLUS OC.INSONIC.CA, SONIC.IN. It went through like butter.

I'm tired of doing clean installs and Dell already ordered a new hd. Might as well take it. After that I'm relaxing. Long weekend and month doing installs and building.

Soup Thnx for these guides and autostreamer. I'm going to add it to my install folder n burn it to a dvd. I was on the fence about whether calling dell and voiding the dispatch order for the new hd as I finally got to do what I set out to. What the heck. I'll get a new hd and still do w/e I want.

@atifsh: I didn't try slipstreaming update rollup 2 and I don't think sp3 includes it. Right now it's a mood point as I was just wanting to remove unwanted components and slipstream sp3. It has a large footprint mce 2005. If something warrants slipstreaming update rollup 2 then I guess it shouldn't be that difficult. I think what it did w/sp3 was revert mce 2005 back to the 2002 version. The important thing was getting it to install. I'm guessing anything now is all downhill. I'll also download and copy update rollup 2 to a cd just in case.

I am going to investigate this further as I need to come up with a MCE generic disk for computers repairs

I was pretty sure MCE was just home tweaked with some media components/enhancements

Why would M$ sell mce for less than xp pro?

yes u are right mce2005 is not pro, but its neither home.
mce2005 disable domain function after it actually installs windows part and when it is installing mce part. once i cripled install process and ended up with domain option available but everything was so messedup that it cant be used.

mce2004 or earlier [mce + sp2 gives u mce2004] were exactly pro, u can choose not to use mce key and endup exact xp pro on those disks.

joining a domain, default option to install fax and the MSbackup are the big differences between pro and home

Chewy this is what I got after following this tip I found through Google.

Use a mce 2005 oem w/update 2 rollup included. Mine has it. remember it doesn't use .net 2 framework, but that doesn't matter as when you copy the oem it will only install the .net 1 framework. slipstream sp3 into it but it won't work unless you copy and paste the files above into the i386 folder in sp3. difference in size. now if it's going to go on the same pc as the person who had it it won't even ask you for the key. At least in my case it hasn't and yes it has been verified by M$ as a genuine disc through their own site using the genuine advantage bs for authintication which I really didn't need cause I didn't notice my oem had updatye rollup 2 already in. I used nlite w/no problems. cut out as much as possible and removed the rest of the billy boy crap through add/remove programs. nlite will show it as having sp3 installed if you put it back in to just see what you have or further tweaks. It takes about a good 45 mins. or so to install completely. Pretty big footprint but less because of nlite/sp3 etc.. w/power user guide if necessary. It's running like butter on my dell. I'm leaving it alone. Like you said only so much you could do w/entry level pcs. I'm using my build for video work/internet mostly. The dell for video work but not too much as only 80gb.

Btw include all the driver folders from the pc you're working with and that'll go through also. No sense using their install driver cd unless you have to. Has a bunch of crap on there that you don't need anyhow. Not much you could remove w/nlite but anything at all is better than nothing. media center takes up a lot and brings stuff w/it.

Not supported by the streamer app. posted by Soup unless you want to play w/that and make it so. nlite takes care of it all.
