Hi, If i buy an external hard drive to connect to my usb, can i use it straight away or do i need to install anything on it, i havent got the original xp disk, so if i need to install that i'm knackered, i want it really to load things such as, music, pictures, etc.

You'll need an enclosure that connects to your USB port. After that, plug it in, format it via Start → Admin Tools → Computer Management → Disk Management and away you go.

Hi folks,
Here is my 2 cents next to the Gurus ...
If you want to use your External HD to playback your Pictures, Music (assuming they are MP3), or Music Video through a TV via a DVD Player ... if your DVD Player has a USB Port on it (for example like Philips DVD Players) ... then FORMAT your HD "FAT32".
BTW, anything larger than 6GB External has to have it's own External Power (I found that out when watching my Music Videos via my 8GB Flash Drive ... as long as I kept my volume below 6GB ... it played A-OK on Philips DVD Player with Front USB port).
If that is not your intention and you want to use it with your PC or Laptop only then I would Format it NTSF ... as "NT" suggested becuase then you won't have File Limitation Size.
