Nvidia Reports Problem With Laptop Chips

Nvidia has uncovered a problem with some older graphics chips that shipped in "significant quantities" of laptop PCs, the company said Wednesday.
Nvidia hasn't determined the exact cause of the problem but said it relates to a packaging material used with some of its chips, as well as the thermal design of some laptops. Modern processors generate considerable amounts of heat.
To tackle the problem, the company is releasing a software driver that will cause system fans to start operating sooner and reduce the "thermal stress" on the chips. The driver has been provided to laptop makers directly

I have the fan set to run at slow speed all the time. I have also change the heat sink compound to artic silver. The temps are a little lower and the fan does not run in high speed, the time is shorter then before.

          Hi atifsh,

I just bought a new laptop Sager NP2092 (Compal JFL92) which has "NVidia GeForce Go8600GT with 512MB" ... I guess that means my GPU card is one of those faulty ones!?!?

Now, I heard a guy from Canada saying his darn exact GPU card was Overheating" ... actually his words were "Burning" after 9 months that he had the exact same notebook as mine.

I still have 2 weeks that I can send my Unit back for Full Refund no Questions asked.

What do you or anyone else suggests here!!!

BTW, does nVidia have a RECALL on these darn GPUs?

          Thanks,

          G!

as far i know nvidia only providing some software for that that control fan.... but i dont see or find any news on nvidia website.

i have vostro for last 7 8 months that has 8400M GS 128 card, but still it works fine, yes it does gets hot, specially when on adapter power, i can feel hot air blowing out the left side.
i dont play games almost no editing on this one now.... still working fine...

remember ur card is faster and will exhaust more heat.

If you are able to get your laptop apart like I did. I cleaned off the chips and heat sinks and put on artic silver heat sink compound on the video chip and the cpu. The laptop is running cooler now. It was a big job and very time consuming to take apart but well worth the effort.

well for me outof 10 i know 8 dont know what processor in their pc's, and other two dont know how a processor or ram module looks like.

Remember when computers had only 640k of ram, and the average price was like $250. Those were that days and the NECv20 cpu. I actually still have that computer. Should try loading windows on it to see if it would run at all.

my first was pentium 133 MMX with huge 1 gb harddisk and monocrome monitor.

first decent one was (1200 $ equalant in RS) AMD Athlon 600.... this was the days when out of 30 days my pc was working just 7 8 days. other days i was doing somthing ... fixing / installing / opening parts to see ... destroying parts buying new parts....... kept on doing that for 6 7 months then i made a new one assembled my self....since then thats what im doing... keep on upgrading replacing stuff....

also at same time iv destroyed 2 televisions, 3 stereos, and a vcr ..... thats when they start calling me crazy and that why dont i be happy when stuff working, why do i have to see whats inside..

well Curiousity killed too many equipment there

                            Hi guys,

@ atifsh ... I use my laptop as my only source of everything ... Video work and what not. Reencoding, reauthoring, all the high intensive CPU work.

Guys, my laptop came with "Arctic Silver 5" but I am assumingthey used that only for the CPU ... I don't suppose they applied it to the GPU.

Q1: Does a dedicated GPU actually help with "Processing Time" for the kind of hobby that we do (you know dvd??? ... stuff)?

If not, I might return the unit and buy me a laptop with Fast CPU ... something like T5750, ot T5850, T8100 or T8300 would be ideal and saty with Intel onboard Graphic ... so that will sove my problem of HEATing (Heat Cycle).

                            Thanks,
                            G!

i dont think so, unless u need to do some realtime effects that requires hardware acceleration.

T8xxx are pretty dam good, T8100 i think is the choice for price/speed.
