SATA Drive Hooked up to IDE Cable

I just bought a Lite On optical drive but, didn't realize the drive had SATA connections. The Dell computer I have has SATA connections for the hard drives but the optical drives are connected by IDE cables.

Do they make a adapter cable that has IDE on one side and SATA on the other?

There is a usb to sata adapter also. But like was mentioned above if you have a open Sata connection on the motherboard you can use that.

Hopefully you can use NightTran and atifsh suggestion, because it will hook staight to an available SATA line.

If not, the answer to your question is yes, they do make micro boards to change IDE to SATA or SATA to IDE, you can also find some cables with the board built into them. If you go this route make sure you get the right direction as some boards only allow the transfer one way. Most of them cost between $17-30, but you can usually find them on eBay for $5-10 shipped.

Is it too late to exchange the optical drive?
I have a feeling that by using adapters, transfer speeds will be slower. And I think you won't be taking full advantage of your new drive. Maybe someone else can talk about this.
You could also upgrade your motherboard to a newer model that has more internal sata connectors.

This board will plug directly into the back of your OD and then you can plug in your PATA cable. It supports up to 1.5Gbps which is above ATA 4. It is a little more than what you may find on eBay, but not everyone is comfortable with them, so this is another option.

Thank you for all your suggestions! I want to keep it internal so that kinda rules out the USB adapters. I am thinking about this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16812191071

                    What do yall think?

The board I linked to above, is actually $7 cheaper, and has more options than the one you are looking at. It is scalable from 1.5Ghz to 3.0Ghz and can also be set to master or slave.

by the available picture looks like a adapter for making ide drive sata. i see sata plug and power plug on opposite sides, so it cant be fixed on the drive itself, unlike the copyless card that actually is what u should be getting.

if u must buy frm newegg... heres an option..http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16812206001

I never looked at it good, but you are correct atifsh, it is an IDE to SATA board. They have mislabeled the heading for the product. I hope you have not ordered the one you linked to, jmet.

It looks to me like indeed copyless you did link the correct one. It's for going from a sata drive to an IDE connection. atfish is talking about the one jmet linked, which is for an IDE drive going to a sata connection.

Thanks ipaulo, I realize I linked the right one, I apologize, I just didn't clarify myself well enough, I was speaking of the one jmet had linked to was an IDE to SATA, I was speaking of newegg when I said they mislabeled it, and that it why I said I hope jmet had not ordered the one, he linked to.

I now see that my wording was not very clear, I should have said, I never looked at it good, but you are correct atifsh, the one jmet linked to is an IDE to SATA board.

I just hope he realizes that newegg had mislabeled it, before ordering the wrong board.
