    What Happened!!!

For some reason my computer keeps shutting down it's operating system (Windows XP) to avoid damaging the computer every time I start it up saying that there is an "unmountable boot". First I tried System Restore, but it didn't work, then I tried System Recovery & recieved a message saying that the "operating system could not be found". What happened!!!

Like I said before, the operating system would shut itself down to avoid any damage because it encountered an "unmountable boot". The message also suggested that there might an issue with some hardware and/or software that was recently installed, but I hadn't installed any hardware or software recently. It also suggested that I try starting the computer in "safe mode", which I did but it didn't work. As I also said before, I tried using system restore & system recovery, but that also didn't work. It might be the hard drive as you said because the computer is rather old (8 years). Hope this helps. Any suggestions?

boot to a windows cd and seee if it will install or even format

no sense beating a dead horse

5 years is about the average life expectancy of computers
