    Sony external burner problem

I have a Sony external dvd burner drive, about 3-4 years old.
    It will not stay closed.
When i try to close the drive(whether or not it has a Dvd in the drive, it closes and then reopens (ejects)within a few seconds.
Any thought on how to fix this problem would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance. Jamos

Have you tried the drive with the usb cable disconnected, and did the drive still open the door.

      Thanks for quick respnse.
Yes, Ive tried disconnecting the usb cable, tried shutting off/on, and tried simply rebooting.
And various combinations of the above.
However, it still reverts to eject (open) mode.
When i had the problem earlier this week or so , I was able to get it to close by simply rebooting.
      Now nothing works. ???

You could try getting a can of compressed air and blow out the drive might be dust in the sensors for the door.

I've been having the opposite problem with my internal drive, though not as severe. I sometimes can not get the tray to open. When it starts to happen it usually persist, yet when it does decide to open it usually work fine for a little while. I started opening it up using the pin hole. Then by right clicking on my computer and selecting eject. Too bad there is no option to close. As time pasted I began to see CD-DVD Speed freeze up. I haven't tried changing the sata cable yet because I have another drive that's the same model and it worked using the same cable. So I'm starting to think that the burner has seen it's last days.

Have you tried another USB cable yet?

That was going to be another suggestion that I was going to ask.

Well, i dont know what to say. After several weeks of not closing, my dvd burner is now working fine. Maybe it was a software conflict? We'll see how long it lasts.
                  Thanks for your suggestions.

Just had this happen with a BenQ DW1620 & have tried everything to get it working again, all failed, so you are lucky.

I am not sure what caused it to startworking.
I did try cleaning drive with compressed air as someone suggested, but it did not seem to make a differece at the time.
However, I am now wondering if it did move something around to finally get drive to work.
Not sure, but you might give it a try.

                          Hi folks,

You guys having problem with DVD Burner door not Opening or Clsoing ... let me ask you something ... have you used the ImgBurn program or it's Cousin you know what ... to open and close the drive!?!?

If so, that could have caused your problems! Even after changing or resetting I think the problem just stays there!

I think Jamo's suspicion of being a "software" glitch moight be right!

                          Just a thought!

                          G!

                            You raise the blade,
                            You make the change,
You rearange me till I'm sane.
You lock the door, throw away
                            the key,
                            There's someone in my head
                            and it's not me.

It is very possible for the problem that you were having was caused by a software problem.
