Yeah, I saw that - apparently it was limited to some non-English versions, but that's pretty terrible.

Ok I'm in need of a little help. i currently use AVG 7.5.1.43 the free version. I haven't updated since 11/11, because of reading this thread. Is it OK to update now?
Or should I get rid of that program and use Malwarebytes, or another one.
Also I would like to find a good free registry cleaner. I've never used one but after reading some of the info in this forum I figure it's time. I was looking at ccleaner, though I would like to hear what you guys have to say. Again I'm looking for free versions of antispyware and a registry cleaner if possible. ThanksComment

I reccomend avira free for resident antivirus, it's very resource friendly
Avast as a suite is probably best if resources are not an issue
Keep MBAM and SAS an ondemand scanners always
Dump AVG first tho, make sure you never have more than 1 active AV or firewall at a timeComment

Thanks Chewy, I forgot to mention I already have Mcafee for antivirus, and firewall it comes with Aol. So I guess I don't need Avira or Avast. Also as of now I don't use a router.
What is your suggestion for a registry cleaner.
I get that MBAM means Malwarebytes but what does SAS mean.
Will be getting rid of AVG tomorrow.Last edited by ipaulo; 16 Nov 2008, 05:36 PM.Comment

@IPAULO
RegistryFix7 the non-registered freeware version and use REGEDIT to remove the unessary items. Not to agressive and even safe to run without a backup
The one I don't recomment is COMODO registry cleaner way too agressive, it wants to remove items that I know for a fact are good and should not be removed.

neither malwarebytes(free scanner) or SAS(turn off load at bootup) is running resident so you can have them and more like them installed
Something like winpatrol, defender, tea timer(spybot) all run resident and it's better to not have duplicate layers of protection
Multiple layers is fine but not duplicate
confuzed? welcome to the club!Comment

Ok I got rid of AVG. Got MBAM and SAS, ran scans and deleted detected items. I have both set not to start at start up. Thanks
@ ed could post a link for RegistryFix7. I googled but still confused. I found this page, not real sure if it is the second one or not. The first one claims to be better, but you never know who to trust and as you mentioned it might be too agresive.

Better to leave the registry alone.
Registry Cleaners - posted in Anti-Virus, Anti-Malware, and Privacy Software: Hey there again! Thank you to all who posted their great advice! I would appreciate some more. To clean up the registry of Windows XP Home after a bout with an assortment of Trojan and malware attacks, what is recommended? I thought a regitry cleaner of some sort. How about Windows, is there a tool for restoring any possible missing or damaged reg or link files? Please advise, Thanks again, GLast edited by Chewy; 18 Nov 2008, 12:01 AM.sigpic
