Turn off Firefox auto-complete of URL?

I want to turn off Firefox auto-complete of URL's, that are in my bookmarks.

I want to auto complete to work from the browsing history, but FF3 is auto-filling from my bookmarks, which makes things real confusing.

I don't see anywhere in the options to turn this "feature" off.

    Help!

    you can try typing
    about:config

in the address bar and search. Maybe you'll get lucky. I don't do FF3 yet so I don't know where the setting is. One reason I haven't upgraded. That database bookmark format thing is obviously so they can lump everything together and index it!!! aaarrggg!!

Somebody in Firefox community prolly has the answer.

      Thanks Miles,

I will check the Firefox community forums for an answer. I did turn off auto complete & other stuff under tools/options, but that didn't do it...

        Hey Katz
Try unchecking, Tools > Options > Privacy > History > Remember what I enter in forms and search bar.
        I'm running FF 3.05
They tried to Assimilate me and failed!

I did that; it still auto fills the url from my bookmarks. For example, when I start to type "forum", which is what I use to bring up Digital Digest, it will load the url for the first bookmark/thread I have for this site, which is one that is several years old.

Did some reading at the Mozilla forums. Seems this thing is called "Smart Location Bar", or "AwesomeBar" as it is affectionately referred to. Most people there seem to love it, but to me, it is a piece of crap.

As always, this upgrade is supposed to make life easier, but now as I mentioned in prev. posts, it is way more of a hassle; Displaying all of your bookmarks for you to have to scroll thru to get to the url that you want is a hugh waste of time.

I probably have over 1000 sites bookmarked. I am not sure if there is a way to turn this "feature" off without affecting the old style of autocomplete. I will keep researching. Just wanted to give an update on what I have found thus far.

I think I know what you are talking about. I turned off Save History in Tools>Options>Privacy and then cleared my current history and now when I type "di" in the address bar http://forum.digital-digest.com/ is the first one that comes up from my bookmarks.
IE: I type "me" in the address bar and http://mepislovers.org/forums/index.php comes up first.
              Is this what you mean?
Before I turned off history and cleared it, a whole bunch of s&#t was coming up.

I don't know what is going on w/ my system. I did exactly what you said, & still no change. It still continues to display all the bookmarks! Are you using FF 3.0.5?

I even went in & unchecked pretty much everything having to do w/ remembering history, forms, etc. This thing is almost behaving like a M$oft product!

Mine pops up a list of bookmarks also, but the most used is always on the top of the list.
Yep FF 3.05 with NoScript, Adblock and NoSquint for the going blind. LOL
Do you have your bookmarks organized in folders? I have a few folders like video, local, linux, etc on the top of all the rest of my misc bookmarks and I have the most visited on the top of the list in each folder. Digital-digest is on the top in my video folder so when I type "di" in the addess bar it is on the top of the list.

My bookmarks are neatly organized in folder, alphabetically. I have a dozen or so not in folders. I can't believe that Mozilla would do something like this, making the browser totally unusable. I haven't found a good solution as to how to make it work like it did before, but I will keep looking.

Reminds me of Opera Speed Dial thing when I upgraded to 9. First thing I did was shut it off. I think Opera is getting away from it's raison d'etre which was a lean browser that still had the features you needed most out of the box. I think FF addons lit a fire under their butts.

This is why I still use Firefox 2.0

Well, that and because I don't like the looks of Firefox 3, and as far as I know it's not THAT MUCH safer.

I'm with you. When I tried the new Opera and the new FF the default skin had that flat glossy metalic look that reminded me of when Netscape went into the 7.x versions. All bloated with stuff I never want to use.

I'm running 2.0.0.20 which is of course yet another "last" 2.x update
It's like XP .. it won't go away.

Been doing some looking around, found out how to turn this wonderful "awesomebar" feature off! You can get it to work just like the earlier versions, it will auto-complete the site yu have visited previously, not all your bookmarks.
