Why is wireless router so slow?

I installed a Linksys G 2.4 GHZ (802.11g) Model # WMP54G ver 4.1 in a pc that I have. The speed tests are running approx. 2500 kb/s. The pc is in the same room w/ the wireless router (dlink wbr1310). When it is hard-wired, I usually average close to 8000 kb/s.

Seems like a big difference - the wireless card shouldn't be that slow, should it?

        So I understand correctly...

Do you mean 1900 kb/s, as opposed to my wired connection of 8000 kb/s?

This thing is all over the place. Once time it will test at 2500 kb/s, & another time it will be as low as 1100 kb/s. The card is about 5' from the router, not really obstructed; I just wanted to clean up the clutter of wiring.

@Abuilder - I did reset the router, just for good measure!

Sorry Chewy; now I am confused! My wired connection shows a speed test of 8000 kb/s. How can the wireless be faster?

I didn't have a network set up, didn't really need to share files between the two. However, I just set it up now, and just as in the past (I have done 2 before) it was a total nightmare. I don't know why this networking thing has to be so difficult. On my main pc, I don't even have "My Network Places" anywhere that I can find it, so I can't view the other pc with it.

On my son's pc, I was able to view files with it, but only a couple folders. I can't see the hard drives, etc., on my pc at all. On top of that, it is EXTREMELY slow for anything to load after you click on it.

What do I need to do to make this thing work right?

                  Hi Katz,

To solve My Network places try this:
Right click taskbar on bottom of screen/properties/start menu tab/customize/check my network place/ then ok/apply/ok

                  Good Luck

Make sure that you have the file sharing on and also turn the sharing on for the root drive.

burrell - my network place is not in there. Expand Network Connection is. I checked that box, no change I still can't see the other pc.

Doc - did what you said; A "hand" is now appearing under the folder on the other pc, & under my "C" drive, but I still can't see my drive from the other pc...

Have you tried to put my network places on desktop?

Did you reboot both PC's after what Doc said?

this is always good practise, whether you use it or not, a friend at his office couldn't get any of their pc's online, the isp said the dsl modem was fine(they could see it from their end)
haha, he had networking set up and every computer could see the other thru the router, no computer could connect to the wan directly thru the modem

those points had bellsouth roll the truck and new modem voila

Yes they could see from their end. But it doesn't mean that it is working properly. When I was having my router/modem problems with Comcast they did not understand how to fix the problem. I had to use an open DSN server solution. I never did get any compensation for that either. It also took me almost a year to get a new router.
