    DVD writer problem

My onboard DVD writer, recently fitted to replace original, is playing up. For the first few months all ran as it should.
During the last week its write speed, regardless of speed asked for, has decreased to the point where it only just manages to maintain 1.6,coming down in steps from a start of 8x or above. Dont know about read speed. Its external mate, same make, still works fine after 2 years. Any ideas ???? (PS> this is when burning videos with ANY burn program) Cheers

A lot of the time it changes because you were trying to read a badly scratched disc, after so many errors it resorts to PIO mode only.

Thanks copyless. It was a very new disc at the time I first noticed the speed, probably happened on a dirty disc earlier, anyway all is well now, and have saved instructions for fixing it !!! Cheers
